WordPress Themes Portfolio

This page covers just a few of the WordPress themes we have designed recently. Other projects listed are those that include custom WordPress coding, and static sites that we turned into dynamic CMS sites (as noted). This is by no means a comprehensive list of our WordPress projects, but wwe try to add highlights of our WP work from time to time. Established Static HTML Site Migrated to WordPress and Updated with a Custom Theme

Billy over at InfamousKidd.com has been running a popular movie related site for a few years, and wanted to take advantage of the great CMS capabilities of WordPress. With a very regular publishing schedule and loyal followers, switching his site to WP made his job organizing and publishing content much more convenient, not to mention the expanded functionality we were able to incorporate, using plugins and some custom coding.

Another thing lacking in the old site was there being no way to easily edit the templates or layout, to add advertising or other features. With WordPress (and all WP themes we design), widgetized sidebars make adding any functionality or content a piece of cake.

Of all the different types of sites out there, I can’t think of a better candidate for getting huge results out of switching from a static site to a dynamic CMS than Billy’s site, because he has so many followers and so many interactive elements to his site plan and vision for continued development. For example, with WP it was easy to add plugins for reader polls and a polls archive, random quotes, and of course all the social sharing doodads (Facebook updates shown on-site, as well as bookmarking options for all the popular social networking sites) that help his fans network and communicate with each other.

Travel Blog with All the Latest Social Networking Bells & Whistles

Elise and Anthony’s baby, PositiveWorldTravel.com, took off in 2009 when they took off on their amazing travel adventures. They use the site to share all the fun, difficulties and exotic experiences they encounter. Naturally, this meant hooking the site up with all the latest, best social networking services, and upgrading WP’s already superb multi-media capabilities so they can easily upload the pics and videos they shoot while traveling.

For their Photos section, they wanted to incorporate their SmugMug pictures, and for their Store they wanted to be able to easily plug-in their Amazon eStore, while maintaining the look and feel of their own site. With WordPress theme options, these features were incorporated so that Anthony and Elise can easily modify just about any aspect of the site they want to, with just basic internet connection.

Some additional features are rotating header images that can be added to at any time, and current Amazon items the travelers are listening to and reading. In a few short months they have taken the custom theme and other tools and run with them!

Static Site Converted to WordPress + Paypal API Coding for Seamless Payment Processing On-Site

For this project we did not do any graphic design work, but rather converted their existing static HTML site to WordPress. We created an interface through which admins can easily update their tabular data for the webinairs, classes and seminars the company provides.

Additionally, a number of WP page templates were created using Paypal API so the client can easily change event prices from within WordPress, and payments are processed without site visitors ever leaving 360company.biz.

PSD-to-WP-Theme with Theme Options and Dynamic Content

portfolio-iifundsJames provided a sleek PSD for www.iifunds.com.au which we turned into a custom WP theme with several options for easily updating the special content areas of the site. This project is also a good example of using plugins to expand upon the already flexible capabilities of WordPress.

For example, the NAVT Lists plugin is an awesome tool for creating custom navigation areas so that clients are not limited to even certain pages or custom meta keys, but can create menus from any WP item (post, page, category, archive) or external link. For this theme, we’re using NAVT widgets for the top navigation as well as the left sidebar navigation.

The main video is displayed with a video widget. The admin can now easily change the video by changing the video ID#, or switch to random mode and add video ID#s.

The random quote area is another widget area, populated with the widget generated by the Stray Random Quotes plugin. The three excerpted articles along the bottom are set as a feed URL via theme option, as well as the category ID# which the 2nd column (below vid) should use to generate the content (cat description, title and excerpt of latest post in that cat). Additionally, we used the CForms plugin to collect information from those who are interested in downloading a file. The protected download file can be set on the theme options page.

Overall this was a very fun project with several opportunities to take advantage of some great WP functionality and expand upon it with plugins. I’ll definitely be using the NAVT plugin on more projects in the future. James was very accommodating, allowing me to try out these solutions on his sites, in addition to providing such clear specs and communication. -we’ve worked on a few projects now and I look forward to working on more.

I worked with Erin to develop a WordPress blog from a PSD that had already been designed. She provided an excellent scope of work, a reasonable fixed price quotation which she stuck to.

She completed the work very quickly and helped us in a number of other ways in the meantime with issues that we were having with our other WordPress blogs. She also provided a full readme document about how to use the website. I highly recommend her and we’ll certainly be using her again in the future.

She was a pleasure to work with.

Theme Customization

portfolio-nanetteFor this project, the client wanted to go with the Irresistible theme by Woo Themes, but wanted to customize it to stand out from other sites using the same theme. The Irresistible theme already comes with many layout and style options, so the design changes were minimal.

We created some new theme skins, such as the rising moon skin shown here. We added some theme options so that the skin and butterfly image can easily be changed from the admin panel.

Additionally, we added some Google Adsense blocks and connected these with the client’s Analytics account, customized an installation of the Simple Press forum plugin to match the new theme, and set up some additional functionality like mass mailing and member subscriptions.

Melnyk’s Golden Theme

melnyks golden wordpress themeSerge has a popular Chinese Lessons site run on WordPress and aMember. He wanted to update his WP theme and aMember templates with a more modern style. He also wanted to incorporate an aMember login area into the header of his theme so that members can easily login. When logged in, the login area provides links for members to access their account area.

Here’s what his site looked like before. To the right you can see the theme we designed, or check out his site and pick up some Chinese by listening to Serge’s podcasts while you’re at it.

Moxy Digital

portfolio-moxyCandise already had a site design she liked, but wanted to add a matching blog section. I explained that converting her whole site to WordPress would be worth the relatively small amount of work/cost, so we converted her static HTML to PHP in a WordPress theme and added a blog page template where all her posts appear.

We did some graphic design work to add header graphics on her main static pages and reworked some of the original web graphics to accommodate longer WordPress blog pages and added some sidebar and list styling. We also did some blog setup of additional plugins. For example, Candise also wanted her contact form switched to a WordPress plugin so she could easily change the form fields and other settings, and she wanted to show her latest Twitter Tweets on her sidebar. (as of June 2010: the owner of Moxydigital.com has apparently taken down the site.)

Grayscale Journal

grayscale journal: free wp themeThis theme has a different approach to color. The main color scheme is grays with one highlight color for links and such. Varying levels of transparency make the ‘highlight color’ appear in various shades for different page elements. In the theme options page you can input a HEX code (such as #FF0000) or a color word like ‘red’ and all the highlighted areas change to that color family. This theme is also setup for displaying thumbnails (post icons) on index pages.

I Hate Clowns

portfolio-ihateclownsAnother person wanting to switch their HTML site to WordPress, Rodney already had a popular site (http://ihateclowns.com) and a nice site design, but in addition to adding WordPress CMS functionality, he wanted to add additional widget-ready sidebars to highlight items from his store, and add a sliding corner banner image. He also wanted to have random quotes in the header, so we set up his ihateclowns theme with some plugin tags.

Brownscale: an All-CSS theme

brownscale: free wp themeThis one started as a request from Chad at http://allthewrongtopics.com who wanted a minimalistic CSS (no images) theme for his bizarro fiction site. He also wanted to be able to change the colors, fonts and some other theme elements from his wp-admin panel. We came up with Brownscale: a fluid-width theme in browns and grays. The basic idea was a theme styled entirely by CSS so that nearly every aspect is editable in terms of color. It comes with a theme options page where background colors, font colors, font family (and other aspects too) can be changed.

Brownscale is now also available for free download. See the theme demo, documentation, or download it now.

Ultimate Pinot

portfolio-ultimatepinotHere’s another WP theme we converted from a static HTML design. It was already a great design, we just improved upon some details and added some new layout areas. We reworked some of the web graphics to better accommodate a sidebar and other WordPress elements like including a widget-ready sidebar, and some additional web graphics were added to the original design for enhanced depth to the styling.
